Bariatric Surgery is not for everyone. The VA is dedicated to offering veterans alternatives to surgery: 

MOVE! Weight Management Program  comprised of group or individual classes that teach healthy eating habits and exercise.  Contact your primary care team for details.
Nutrition Services Department  a team of Registered Dietitians can help you with individual counseling for a number of health concerns like weight, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and renal disease among many others.  Ask your primary care provider to refer you to a dietitian.
TeleMOVE! a home telehealth program that encourages weight loss through the use of daily computerized messages and a home scale.  Contact your primary care team for details.
Obesity Action Coalition* raises awareness of obesity and those that suffer from obesity
