So far May has been filled with the electric energy of summer. The excitement is not lost at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, where a number of exciting opportunities for health care access and resources are on the horizon for Veterans throughout the Lowcountry. Two notable events are happening this week for Veterans along the coast with the grand opening ceremony for a new Joint Physical Therapy Clinic in Beaufort, South Carolina, and a Welcome Home information and resource fair at our outpatient clinic in Hinesville.

New Joint Physical Therapy Clinic in Beaufort

Charleston VA is a nationally recognized leader in health care quality and efficiency, and collaborates with federal partners to improve Veterans' access to comprehensive, timely care of the highest quality. As part of this aim, Charleston VA and Naval Hospital Beaufort have partnered to provide physical therapy services for Veterans and active duty military members and their beneficiaries in the Beaufort, South Carolina area.

Veterans, Servicemembers and members of the community* are all invited to attend the grand opening ceremony for the new VA-DOD Joint Physical Therapy Clinic, Thursday, May 19, at 11:30 a.m. on the front lawn of the Naval Hospital. Guests are welcome to tour the new facility after the ceremony and light refreshments will be provided.

"Opening this Physical Therapy Clinic allows us to bring more of the specialty care Veterans and DoD beneficiaries in this area need closer to home," says Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center Director Scott R. Isaacks. "We continue to expand our partnership with Naval Hospital Beaufort working together to ensure those who serve our country are getting the highest quality health care and service.  They deserve nothing but the very best and we're proud to provide that for them at our VA."

The new clinic marks the first time that VA patients will have local access to physical therapy services at Naval Hospital Beaufort. The newly expanded Physical Therapy Clinic is funded through a federal Joint Incentive Fund awarded to the Lowcountry Federal Healthcare Alliance as part of a national initiative to facilitate health care sharing between the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs. The shared clinic is staffed by VA and DoD providers, and includes four physical therapists, two PT assistants, four PT techs and two medical support assistants. Charleston VA's first joint VA-DoD Physical Therapy clinic opened at Naval Health Clinic Charleston in 2015.

Naval Hospital Beaufort is located at 1 Pinckney Boulevard in Beaufort, South Carolina.

Hinesville Welcome Home Event

Veterans and transitioning Servicemembers are invited to attend a free Welcome Home event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, May 20, 2016, at the Hinesville VA Outpatient Clinic.

Throughout the year, VA facilities across the country conduct Welcome Home events for returning Servicemembers as part of VA's effort to provide information about the full range of services available to Veterans and their families. This Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Hinesville VA Outpatient Clinic is hosting a free Welcome Home event for Veterans a bit further down the coast.

During this event, Veterans can enroll for VA health care and discuss Veteran benefits on-site with VA staff and Veteran Service Officers. Representatives from community agencies, local employers and area universities will also be on hand to discuss educational and employment opportunities for Veterans. Additionally, Veteran Services Organizations, including Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and United Military Care, will be there to provide information about how VSOs can offer assistance and camaraderie for Veterans and their families. Food and beverages will be provided.

"This Welcome Home event is one way our VA is recognizing our Veterans along with all returning military Servicemembers and their families to show our appreciation for their sacrifice and commitment to serving our nation," said Mr. Isaacks. "It is our honor and privilege to be entrusted with the health care needs of Veterans throughout the Lowcountry and we are committed to continue to provide them with the best care anywhere."

The event will be held in the side parking lot of the clinic, located at 500 East Oglethorpe Highway in Hinesville, Georgia. Earlier this month, the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center hosted a resource fair and concert event for Charleston Veterans.

Mark your calendars for these great events!
