Keeping America’s Promise: Online Access to Support Veterans Health

Melvin Marks, Veteran and Ralph H. Johnson VA volunteer, has worked with MyHealtheVet since it first rolled out for patient use in 2003.   Melvin was working as a volunteer in another department when he heard about the web site, www.myhealth.va.gov.  Melvin stated, “I walked into a waiting room and saw a brochure about the program.  I called Susan Haidary, the VA contact for the program and asked her if I could hand them out with every Veteran ID card I was helping to process.  I also had a personal interest as a patient, I wanted to be able to order my prescription refills online.  So it all started from there.”

Susan Haidary, M. Ed, LBSW is now the National Stakeholder Manager for the MyHealtheVet program.  When she and Melvin met in 2003, she was working in the Education Department for the CharlestonVA.  “Melvin was and still is a godsend.  He tests new updates for us before we roll out changes nationally to the MHV site.  His feedback and friendship are invaluable.  He was there at the beginning and has assisted other Veterans with registration for 10 years.”

My HealtheVet (www.myhealth.va.gov) offers Veterans secure access to portions of information in their VA health care records anywhere and anytime with an upgraded account.  My HealtheVet lets them save, print and share their health information using the VA Blue Button, refill VA prescription(s) online and track their health activities, among other functions. Veterans can opt in to Secure Messaging to communicate electronically with their VA health care teams and can also view VA appointments, lab results and more.

“I think a lot of the older Veterans, like me, may not be as comfortable with using a computer.  That’s why I like helping them register for MyHealtheVet.  It’s pretty easy once you get started, “added Melvin.

My HealtheVet is celebrating 10 years of online access. All Veterans, Servicemembers and employees are encouraged to enroll or upgrade today at www.myhealth.va.gov
