Honoring our Fallen Heroes
The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center held its 3rd annual Memorial Service November 20 to remember Veterans who passed away in 2012.
The memorial service was held at Summerall Chapel at The Citadel with families of Veterans who have passed away were in attendance.
There were one hundred Veteran names read and family members were invited to come forward when their loved one’s name was called. Among the named called, there were two fallen Soldiers who had received The Purple Heart: one World War II Veteran and one who served in the Vietnam War.
The Washington Light Infantry served as the Honor Guard for the ceremony and new banners made for the VAMC chapel were part of the service as well. Chaplain John Painter, along with Social Worker Susan Storm, is responsible for the memorial and bereavement aspects of the Palliative Care Program at the VAMC and this year Painter wanted to place a lasting memorial in the VAMC chapel to acknowledge those veterans.
