Inpatient Palliative Care
About the Program
Our palliative care inpatient beds are dedicated to the support and care of veterans with life-limiting illnesses. Our mission is to provide compassionate, holistic care. We strive to lessen all forms of suffering, in a setting that assists our veterans and their families to find peace of mind, body and spirit.
Together with the veteran and his/her family, the Palliative Care Team strives to ensure that the end-of-life wishes of the veteran are honored. The team consists of physicians, a nurse practitioner, social workers, chaplains, a physical therapist, and a psychiatrist. The team is supplemented by the many other specialty support services which are available in an acute care hospital.
Inpatient palliative care beds are available on the acute care and intensive care units of the Charleston VA Medical Center in downtown Charleston, South Carolina and at the Patriot’s Harbor Community Living Center located in the West Ashley neighborhood of Charleston, South Carolina.
The hospice and palliative care unit accepts veterans with life-limiting illnesses and provides acute pain and symptom management, family support, dynamic discussions of goals of care, and hospice care. Veterans accepted for palliative care must be reviewed and accepted by the palliative care team's attending physician. Palliative care beds are not intended for long term care. Veterans appropriate for community home hospice will be referred as appropriate.
